A Fiesta of Love

Hola!

And you were wondering where we were. Oh just a little busy organising the best Mexican Fiesta engagement party for an amazing couple we know. They were lucky enough to have two engagement parties one in their hometown of Christchurch and one in Melbourne. Miss L and I were lucky enough to have a part in helping out with the Melbourne party. I am sure this was due to our incredible effort at the Bride to Be’s High Tea.

They chose a Mexican Fiesta theme which was fine by us with our massive love of all things Mexican! So off to the Mexican store we went buying ridiculous amounts of Corn Chips, Jalapenos, Jarritos, Tequila and the list goes on!

For the food we had a simple menu of corn chips, guacamole and salsa, sliders with pulled pork or black bean patties, tostadas with pulled pork and pineapple salsa AND some amazing moustache cupcakes and some pinata cookies which we will share later on.

We were lucky enough to be able to use the couples house as a venue and brightened it up with some mexican flags, sombreros and a fun photo booth. It was all very easy and fun to set up. So easy that we started the day with a ladies lunch and then got our nails done!

It was an incredible night that ended in two straight hours of karaoke which involved eight of us standing around a juke box singing at the top of our lungs. Always a sign of a good night I say.

We are so thankful to have been a part of it and look forward to the couples big day. We love you two heaps!

Insider’s View.

You may remember a while a go we had our close friends high tea party where we paraded around in our fancy best sipping tea (glasses filled to the top of bubbles and jars of Pimms) and devouring little quiches and sweet delights. ¬†If you can’t remember us talking about that maybe you remember those multi coloured, freakishly good cupcakes we created for the event? ¬†We wanted to share a few of the pics with you from the day (which ended in Filet’o’fish burgers at Maccas enroute home) and show you a few things we helped with to create the social event of our May calendar.

We’ll start with the more respectable photos ladies . . .

Our prized cupcake tower complete with chocolate freckles.  Sheeeeeesh they were awesome.

We make our own bunting bitchesssss!

Mason jars all beautified ready for the drinking of the Pimms.  Two types of ribbon even!

How cute is the tea set from¬†www.thehighteacompany.com.au. ¬†We couldn’t believe there was a company totally devoted to high tea either!

Ok so there was tea at some stage!

But more importantly wine of the sparkling kind.

And Pimms made by us! ¬†It’s all about the citrus fruit.

The Hit List #11

Hey guys,

I have to apologise about the lack of photos today. My camera has died and gone to camera heaven so I am relying on my iphone which is not the greatest.

Anyway a few things to read over your morning coffee arts, a bit of Alexander Wang and of course food ūüôā

1) Chet Faker

If you have not heard of him… where have you been?! JK but if you haven’t I highly recommend giving him a listen. Chet Faker whose legal name is Nick Murphy is a Melbourne artist who won ‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year’ in 2012 in Australia. He has an amazing beard which I am sure adds to the epicness of his voice! He has released an album ‘Thinking in Textures’ which won best independent release in the Rolling Stones Australian Awards. The album is definitely one you could listen to over and over again, however some of my favourites from him are his covers including ‘No Diggity‘.

Mr Short and I were lucky enough to hear him perform on Friday night and he started with my personal favourite ‘Archangel‘ he had me as soon as him and his beard walked on the stage. Go and check him out on SoundCloud.

2) Girl Scout Cookies

I have an amazing friend who lives in California and does some incredible work for the Girl Scouts. While she unfortunately lives very far away I do get the perks of her sending me USA treats which is always a good thing. I was lucky enough last week to receive some Girl Scout Cookies YUMMM. While I LOVE the Girl Guide (yes different name) cookies from New Zealand the states as usual takes it a whole lot further with some amazing flavours. My favourites are Samoas… (and yes they do not realise that is not right!). My friend loves the cookies so much she had a Girl Scout Cookie bar at her wedding. IT WAS AMAZING!

3) Bangarra

I love DANCE. Whether its me dancing around the house or watching it on TV its all delish, But my favourite is to see an amazing performance. I am lucky to have been to a number in Australia and one of my favourite groups are Bangarra an Indigenous performing arts association who have the most incredible works. Their main goal is to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians and to tell their stories on stage.

I saw their latest production Blak last night with Muma Short. If you get a chance to see them I would recommend it they are incredible.

4) Alexander Wang Diego Bucket Bag

I have a total love hate relationship with this bag. When I was in NYC my gorgeous travel companion showed me this Alexander Wang Diego Bucket Bag. I instantly fell in love and after a short trip to the Alexander Wang flagship store I had yet another thing to pack in my suitcase home. I didn’t care as this was the best purchase of the trip and something that would remind me of my wonderful time in the big apple.

Where is the hate part? Well this bag is soooo amazing to look at but ridiculously unpractical. It is the heaviest bag ever and you can hardly put anything into it. Because of this after a few wears the strap broke. AW was great and had it shipped back to the states and repaired for me. I was understanding as these things happen and was eager to get the bag back and all fixed. That was until I wore it on its first outing, since its makeover in the states, only to have the strap break AGAIN. I was in a hard place as I LOVED the bag but I had hardly had a chance to wear it with it being in transit pretty much its whole life to get fixed. Any who after AW saying I could only get it fixed and not return it, it has now FINALLY arrived back to me…. nearly 2 years later from first purchase… and I now get to wear it again. I will keep you posted on how that strap goes!

Ciao for now, have an amazing weekend. I am looking forward to this one! Spending tonight planning our gorge friends engagement party then celebrating Mothers Day, Papa Shorts Birthday and my parentals 30th Wedding Anniversary… Exciting!!!

While I LOVE celebrating special occasions I am a firm believer of celebrating life always as its so precious.

Much love xS

Our Picks from the Met Gala.

Just because everyone else is doing it we want our say . . . It also appears that half of New York celebrity and wealth do not know how to dress punk (the Met Gala theme this year).

1. Cara Delevingne in Burberry.

Image

I need this dress in my life. . .

Image

2.  Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture, damn it I guess that counts this dress out for potential (long time down the track, not really thinking about that kind of stuff right now) wedding dress.

Image

3. Jessica Alba in Tory Burch.

Image

4.  Emma Watson in Prabal Gurung

Image

5. Sienna Miller in Burberry, ¬†She’s mentioned due to the jacket and the hair. ¬†Hand them over!

Image

And the only guy I need to mention . . . Frank Ocean in Givenchy, check the shoes!

Any stand outs for you?

Multi-Coloured Cupcakes

You may recall we had a bit of a “girls day in” high tea on the weekend. ¬†Along with helping out the birthday girl to set up we also created some pretty amazing (to look at and eat) cupcakes. ¬†We’re both not exactly Martha Stewart in the kitchen but enjoy fun new things none the less so here’s our creation ¬†. . . .

You’ll need:
Cupcake batter (so this was out first cheat, we didn’t have much time to start from scratch) we used two packets to make 18 good sized cakes. ¬†The packet also asked for 4 eggs, 1/2 cup milk and 120g of softened butter, additional ingredients will differ depending on the packet you get. ¬†Must be vanilla!!
Food Colouring
Cupcake cases
A few bowls.

Image

Image

First make the batter according to the directions on your packet (or if you’re a wizz in the kitchen create your own vanilla cupcakes from scratch).

Image

Next you divide the batter into four bowls and add a little food colouring to each bowl. ¬†We went for red, yellow, green and purple (yeah that horrible looking colour is purple, don’t worry it cooks fine!)

Image

To get the ‘marbled/multi’ effect spoon little bits of each coloured batter in to the cupcake cases. ¬†Make sure you don’t mix the colours together as you’ll end up with some not so pretty looking ones . . .

Image

Place in the oven for 20-25 mins at 180¬įC.

Image

We placed ours too close to the top of the oven so the top cooked too quick hence the rather lopsided look.  Easily fixed by cutting off the top to make a flat surface for icing.

Image

Image

Icing: ¬†We used cream cheese (because its the best!) So you’ll need 60g soft butter (not melted!), between 4-6 cups icing sugar, 120g soft cream cheese. ¬†Use an electric beater to beat until light and fluffy and the colour is not so ‘buttery’. ¬†Place into a piping bag and ice which ever way you want.

Image

We placed chocolate freckles in between each cupcake to emphasise the multi colours.

Image

Image

Happy Birthday Kristy!  You might want to disregard the amount of alcohol in this photo!

Image

We hope you enjoy making yours!

Flavour of the Week

Hey guys,

A short and sweet one today for Flavour of the week. I have been looking around for some comfy pants that can still be quite dressy when needed but are not so restrictive as some of the tighter styles out there. I have stumbled across these awesome staples from Phillip Lim. They are the¬†Draped Pocket Trouser that come in a variety of colours and prints each season from classy black through to amazing bright colours and different prints. I think they would be amazingly versatile and could be dressed up with heels to go out, worn to work or just casual comfy pants for the weekend. I think I need these in every colour available! Some of my favourites are below…

The Hit List #10

Welcome to the end of the week!  We hope you all have some fun things planned for the next couple of days.  Little Miss short and I are attending a much anticipated bday celebration this weekend full of catch ups, wine and other lovely lady things.  I have a pretty random mixture for the hit list this week as I have taken random photos whenever an idea for the list has come up . . .

1. Cushions
I know the reaction to cushions especially from a guys perspective is that they are a waste of space and material. ¬†They are just those annoying things that add time to making the bed in the morning and getting in to bed at night but I for one love them. ¬†Last Christmas I was gifted four by friends and family two from the Good Room in Mount Maunganui, one from Pendleton and the last a native Agent “Aotearoa” cushion, you can get a similar one here.

Image

¬†There are also a few others I would love to add to my “collection” if I could call it that.

Image

The Bear Cushion from the Good Room

I also have a space in the corner of my room where the ceiling is too low to put pretty much anything so I am trying to find a giant floor cushion to add some corner comfort.  I like these ones from Pony Rider below.

Image

Image

But this could be the pure luxury answer I am looking for . . . the Zip Zip floor cushions that literally zip together and fold a number of ways.  Helloooo next Christmas present!

Image

2.  Flight Coffee Hanger Cafe in Wellington, New Zealand.

So as I have mentioned a million times or more I have just returned from the mother of all trips back to NZ. ¬†We spent a long weekend in Wellington with my family and a few close friends we hardly ever get to see anymore (we being Mr L and myself). ¬†Pretty much all we did the whole time (because it was cold and wet) was eat and drink and one of my favourite places to do so was the Flight Coffee Hangar Cafe and Roastery. ¬†We’d heard about the place from friends and a couple of reviews and of course Mr L was keen to judge the coffee and peek at the roastery because he is a complete coffee connoisseur (snob). ¬†I just wanted a long black and hot food. ¬†The actual cafe is amazingly simple, semi industrial with the light fixtures and very wooden (for lack of a better term) plus I don’t think anyone in Melbourne can rival the hospitality and ‘niceness’ we were served with our delish coffee. ¬†Plus the vegetarian baked eggs were some of the best I’ve had (and I know baked eggs!).

You can get your fix at 171 Р177 Willis St, Wellington Central, Wellington City.

3. A little bit of Bright Orange Lippy

I am a bit of a newbie to this whole lipstick thing, i’ve never been one to wear a lot of makeup and I have been a little scared of smearing the stuff all over my lips and teeth. ¬†I am however quite enamoured with orange and tangerine hues at the moment. ¬†I am lusting after an orange dress at the moment and because my bank balance doesn’t currently allow that kind of expenditure ¬†I will have to settle with a lipstick to add colour. ¬†These are just a couple of the possible purchases . . .

4. Sneakers

I have a bit of a passion for sneakers as mentioned often on this blog my style is anything but dressy. ¬†I wear my favourite sneakers to death and buy the exact same pair year after year . . . actually they’re often gifted by Mr L as my once white shoes look so ratty after a while I’m pretty sure he is embarrassed to be seen with me. ¬†Here is a little snapshot of a few sneaks lying round our house (NB: a bunch of these are my housemates) but at least five of them are mine . . .

these too will soon be part of the growing collection . . .
