Please read this in a David Attenborough-ish voice: There is a wonderful place that is a stark contrast from the hustle and bustle of the big city, a place called Torquay. Ok you can stop the voice now . . .
Beach time is super important to me even if it’s the middle of winter and the water is too cold to step in without a 7mm wetsuit (that’s speak for a wetty so thick you can barely move your elbows). Unfortunately Melbourne City isn’t known for it’s beautiful beaches so you have to travel a little bit to get to a clear coastline riddled with nothing but golden sand and wondrous rough seas. I’m getting so carried away in my own imaginary world of living in a shack by the ocean that I’m forgetting the point of my whole post.
Easter weekend equals Rip Curl Pro weekend at Bells Beach and Mr Long and myself were lucky enough to head down and check it out.
Its such a good vibe in Torquay most of the time but Easter weekend quadruples that feeling and you can’t help but be swept up in a world of whole foods, hoodies, jandals (I’m never giving that name up by the way) surfing and BABES. Everyone is beautiful at a surf comp even the tall blonde guy in Ugg boots . . .
- Everyone seems happy, full of laughs and most have a passion for the sport and the lifestyle. I would hardly call myself a surfer anymore, I haven’t been part of that world since I started city dwelling and I miss it A LOT. You don’t have to be good, just courteous and obliging to the locals, and an ocean lover. I’m not turning all Hippie on you but there is a certain sense of comradery in surf culture ummmm have you seen Lords of Dogtown or Chasing Mavericks?! Haha.
ANYWAY I don’t know how I get so off track . . . The Rip Curl Pro, fun times . . . always overcast, always a gravel covered hill to slip over on . . .
always fans on the beach attacked by the incoming tide,
always an amazing level of surfing,
always surf groupies,
always the smell of hot chips and burnt coffee and always a huge amount of surfing photos taken even though most pics turn out to look like surfing ants.
I’m not going to bore you with winners, losers, and result updates because those of you who want to know all that have already sourced such info from the official guys. Until we meet again next year Rip Curl Pro . . . you’ve been ‘swell’ geddit?!
PS enjoy this photo of Kelly Slater ladies.
PPS. Adriano de Souza took the Mens and Carissa Moore the Women’s . . . woop
Enjoy the rest of your shortened week. xx L
