Flavour of the Week – Spruced Up Trackies.

I usually dislike track pants like STRONGLY dislike them they should be kept as house pants and nothing more in my opinion.  I also think there is almost nothing worse to look at than a guy in sloppy grey track pants, even if they are straight from the gym, ladies they’re not the most amazing things on you either.  Chapel St punters please take note!  I do how ever LOVE the “sports luxe” look such as nike trainers with dresses, sports tanks with dress blazers, stripey tops with denim, long casual racer back dresses and yep I’ve pretty much just explained my dream wardrobe.   Long story short . . . I found some track pants even I would wear thanks to Winston Wolfe . . . the Esmeraldas are perfect leather, elasticated waist, ‘casual yet dressy’ pants and they’ve completely redeemed what I thought the dreaded trackies could be.  See for yourself.

Hit List #5

Happy Easter!!! I hope you all are having an amazing start to your long weekend. Here is you Hit List to make your Good Friday even better! A mixture of delish Easter treats, some Bomber Jacket style, more polka dots and some indoor plant styling for apartments.

1 – Easter Treats

I hope you have all been indulging in some Easter goodies although probably not as many as I have consumed, which is enough for a small city! Once I had my first egg it seemed like I couldn’t stop! Particular favourites are of the Lindt variety including their bunnies and their filled easter eggs and the Crunchie bunny from Cadbury mmmm. New additions this year include the Egg ‘n’ Spoon discovered by Miss Long and the Malteser bunny which is a definite must have for those Malteser lovers out there!

We can also not forget the good old Hot Cross Bun as a treat too. There are a huge variety out there, some a lot better than other so hunt around for the best. My favourite is having them toasted in the oven with a small dollop of butter. DELISH!

Me with my Easter loot for the long weekend!

2 – Bomber Jackets

I am stealing this from both Miss L and Mr Short who are both rocking an amazing bomber jacket from Mr Simple. If you are looking for an easy wear Jacket this season I suggest you have a hunt for a great bomber jacket. They come in a variety of colours to suit your wardrobe and go with just about anything.

Two of my favourite people with their Mr Simple bombers. Mr Short got over this very quickly as you can see!

3. Polka Dots!!

You may have noticed we LOVE polka dots. Well sitting around tonight we were reminded just how much. If you did not see Miss L’s pants post but are looking for some spotty pants you should check them out here, she was sporting these last night and they are amazing. I was matching her with my oh so classy polka dot slippers. Don’t be afraid of Polka Dots they are fun 🙂

Some real live Long – Short action

To tie in with the Polka Dot theme and the wintery weather we are having in Melbourne this Polka dot Umbrella from Marimekko will do perfectly!

I managed to add some more Polka dots to my wardrobe last week with these Sass & Bide jeans.

4 – Indoor/ Outdoor plants

We moved into a new apartment with a balcony that needed some greenery. I wanted to make sure that we could take the plants inside during winter so they did not get damaged so off to Bunnings one Sunday we went feeling very old looking at gardening supplies! I have to say it was heaps of fun and I love the look that our plants give our house. We decided on a Yukka and some chilli plants and we received a cactus from Muma Short as the first of our collection! I look forward to creating some planter boxes for vegetables this Summer. Watch this space… If you have any tips on some good indoor plants please let me know! They have to be minimal care as I am not always the best when it comes to the care taking of the plants 🙂

Yukka that I have now pulled in doors as it leaves were getting a hit in this wind!

HAPPY EASTER!!!!!!!! I really hope you all have an amazing long weekend and enjoy the huge amounts of chocolate you will consume.

Much love xS

A Chocolate Brownie with an Easter Twist.

We have a treat for you this morning, well actually it was  a massive treat for us to devour last night and it’s a little naughty but worth the “life time on the hips” in this case.
Chocolate is undoubtedly the greatest thing about Easter you have every excuse to gorge yourself once a year so why not do it in full force.  In reality we’re coming in to winter down here and what’s better than a loose jersey dress to hide an extra kilo or two?   We bring you OUR version of the Cadbury Creme Egg Brownie.

Image

You’ve probably seen this recipe floating around the internet over the past month or so?  But we thought it looked a little intense to have so much butter and chocolate and richness all in one bite so we made this brownie from the Taste website instead.  It features apple sauce/baby food instead of high amounts of butter and egg whites instead of whole eggs (okay we cheated and added a couple of yokes as well)  OH BY THE WAY WANT TO KNOW THE BEST WAY TO SEPARATE EGGS?!!

A Funny Thing Happened Down the Toiletries Aisle

Image

I had to share this with you.  Be warned this is probably only good for the female population to read . . .  I raced in to the super the other night to buy ahem girls stuff and I couldn’t for the life of me find where the “feminine care” products were stacked.  I disregarded a packing trolley half way down that was manned by two adolescent guys as I thought surely fate wouldn’t be that cruel, making me stand deciding which box to choose while two young men awkwardly stacked the shelves next to me BUT fate is a bastard and that was the case.  I slowly approached the trolley trying to eye up my chosen box when one of the guys obviously picked up on my awkwardness and smiled.  I stood there for a little bit half trying to ignore the situation when one of the stackers picked up a box, handed it to me and said “these are on sale”.  Weirdly enough they were just what I was looking for.  Thanks supermarket boys!

Enjoy the rest of your Monday… xx L

Flavour of the Week

I am pretty sure L promised you something a little less out there this week but I can not resist! Over Summer I bought two pairs of print jeans from Glassons. A black and white print similar to below and a palm tree print. They were cheap as chips and just a bit of fun but I love having them to throw on when I want to wear something different that doesn’t require any thought or effort!

I stumbled across the Sass & Bide pair below and thought they were a great option for a bit of fun. If you want to get away from your every day blue or black jeans but don’t want to go with a colour or too crazy these are definitely a great option.

Hit List #4

Just a word of warning there is a slight overabundance of delicious food in this post I’ve been exploring new places with friends and of course it’s well documented that Melbourne does not disappoint in the world of food.  Read on for a little inspiration, food envy, laughter and pampering.

1. Lusting after: Check/Tartan/Plaid

Oh yeah its back and I’m loving every moment of it.  I’ve been counting down the ‘ahem’ years to pull out my old RPM plaid shirt (flannel of course!) and be able to wear Mr Long’s plaid shirts outside the house instead of reserving them for bed time in the depths of winter.  I’m a real sucker for a good shirt but my absolute favourite look including this reinvented trend is worn by Natascha from In Search of Sadie of course she’s gorgeous (and one of the nicest people ever to boot) but I love the long line skirt with the shirt wrapped around.  Not an easy style to pull off and I would never dare but I’m in just a little awe of her.

Image

Photo courtesy of In Search of Sadie Facebook Page.

There have been a few potential purchases on my horizon like these guys from Zara, they’re a little more feminine than the usual “woodchuck” style and I could seriously utilise all of these in my wardrobe.

ImageI’m yet to find a winter dress I like but i guess Autumn is only just upon us.  I did find this felt Kotur Clutch maybe it’s a little much . . .

Image

2. A delicious feast at:  Wide Open Road

As I mentioned before there is a lot of food in this post i’ll try and keep the mouth watering-ness to a minimum.  This is the first time we had been to the coffee roastery/cafe of Wide Open Road in Brunswick although we’d heard a lot about them.  I’m not about to review everything but I took a few photos and overall its daYummmm good food and the coffee wasn’t too bad either, the cafe is cool, staff are nice and there is a massive cabinet displaying all the delish looking cakes and pastries (sorry I was too busy salivating to take photos.)

Image

I had the mushrooms but the rest of our brunch posse munched on the thick cut bacon dish.

Image

My unbelievable mushroom dish.

Image

Cool cafe layout.

and then there were these two grumps who look starved waiting for their meals to arrive. hahaha.

ImageGet there: 247 Barkly St, Brunswick, Vic.
I’m sure you won’t regret it.

3. Going crazy over:  Coconut Oil

I was a bit of a late bloomer getting on to this one.  We’ve been bombarded by stories of how coconut oil is pretty much the best thing in the world you can ingest, slather over your body, coat your hair in and swirl around in your mouth (thanks Naea for introducing me to the art/weirdness that is oil pulling). I bought a jar just to use as body moisturiser and a night cream . . . I’ll let you know how that goes but I don’t think I’ll ever look back.  The smell is so incredible you have to keep reminding yourself you’re not on a tropical island sipping Pina Coladas and you can lick your fingers after application?  Too much info?  Anyway this is what I bought and just a heads up it’s way easier to find and cheaper to buy in bulk online . . . like everything these days right?

Image

4. Had some fun with the ladies at:  Acland St Cantina

What did I tell you?  There’s a food theme today!  It’s always fun to go out and have a little gossip session with the ladies and we’re all suckers for Mexican Food which the Melbourne restaurant scene has been nuts for for the last 2 years.  One of the most recent places to open is the Acland St Cantina in St Kilda and they have an epic Mexican menu that you can stare at for hours trying to decide between mouth watering dishes.   We got sat at a table near a freezing vent first up but the staff kindly moved us to the ‘moodier’ lounge booth with dim lighting and seats low enough to accommodate Miss Short’s wee legs :P.

Roasted Chick Peas

So this has to be one of the simplest recipes of all time.  It’s a perfect addition to a nibbles plate, a gap filler in between meals and a lower fat snack than chips or nuts for game time TV  watching or bubbles sipping.  The original recipe and a few topping ideas are here for you to mix up and get creative.

You’ll Need:  2 x Can Chick Peas, 2 Tablespoons Oil and flavouring of your choice.

All you have to do is roast the chickpeas in the oven for 45-60 mins at 180º make sure they are well rinsed then drain and dry with a paper towel so all excess water is gone.  This is important to make them deliciously crunchy (insert a Nigella Lawson voice).  You don’t have to use any oil.
Once you’ve got them crunchy while they are still hot drizzle with oil and sprinkle over with your favourite spice mix or coating.  We used 1/2 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp chilli flakes, 1/2 tsp salt, and a teaspoon of Zaatar spice because we’re a little obsessed with it at the moment.

Flavour of the Week – Party Pants.

Ok next week I promise that the flavour of the week will be a little more subdue but for today I found yet another pair of patterned perfections to share with you.  These interesting beauties are by Rag and Bone and and are aptly named the Surf Knit (potentially why I was attracted to them).  I have cheated a little bit here as they’re not strictly jeans of the ‘denim’ kind but a super stretch cotton twill (THEY ARE NOT JEGGINGS!) anyway how could you go wrong with these (they’re on sale everywhere by the way).  Again I think it’s important not to go all black, navy and grey for winter although I am a fairly big culprit, people change thought right?  The good thing is that you don’t have to really think about a top to go with these . . . slouchy black knit anyone?

Image

Of course the fashionista from Tuula Vintage, Miss Jessica Stein got in on the action a while ago as well but better late than never for us right?

The Hit List #3

Hiya, here is the hit list for your Friday 🙂

1) Deal or No Deal

I have a pretty awesome friend called Rosie or Rutz but that is another story! She is definitely a friend who brings a lot of fun and adventure to my life. We have done some awesome things during the time I have known her including going on a cruise together around the Caribbean, travelling through parts of Mexico and Cuba, and helping (not that I needed it) me fall in love with NYC.

Rosie and I riding on some Bici taxis that we ‘borrowed’ from locals in Cuba

Image

An amazing birthday with Rosie including going up the Empire State Building for my birthday

Image

For our latest adventure Rosie asked me to audition with her for the television show Deal or No Deal. I thought why not for a bit of a laugh. We turned up to the audition and with our animated, over the top and loud audition secured a spot on the show!!

So how did we go? Welll….

Image

At first they were throwing out the deals left right and centre but we still had a mega chance of hitting it big… until Miss Short knocked out a few bigguns in a row…

Still we held our ground and with Rosie on the floor there were No Deals or ‘No Vas’s’ being handed out everywhere.
Image

Clearly I thought this offer was ridiculous!!

Image

Aaaaaaannd then things turned a little out of our favour….

Image

But we still walked away with a BIIIGGG cheque!! 🙂

People have said they will never take me gambling with them and I can understand that from this viewing! But it was one of the funniest things I have ever done and I loved every minute of it. Plus you can’t judge until you have been in the Deal o Drome yourself!! If you are based in Melbourne and want to have a laugh I suggest you go and audition. You never know you may be lucky 🙂 A huuuugge thanks to Rosie for asking me to be part of this I had the best time and it will be hilarious to show the grandchildren!

2) Code Black Coffee

For the long weekend we were mincing around Brunswick and stumbled across this awesome Cafe and Roasting House called Code Black Coffee. If you like coffee and not just drinking it but seeing the roasting house in production I suggest you go for a look. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff are very friendly. The coffee was great and the food menu has a variety of options of course making it hard for me to decide. I am in love with the fit out of the premises and wish I lived there. Although it may be a bit loud with all the customers. The cafe is open from 7:00am – 5:00pm 7 days a week.

3) Yo Chi

This is not a newbie but I think it is so good that it is worth a mention. An awesome friend of ours stumbled across Yo Chi one day and came home to his partner with two gigantic tubs of Frozen Yoghurt. This couple are quite the foodies so when they raved about it I thought this place must be good. And it is the best Frozen Yoghurt place I have been to in Melbourne. They have an amazing selection of flavours which change seasonally including, Original, Chai, Hazlenut, Berry, Coconut, Passionfruit, Honey Soy, Chocolate and the list goes on… You then go and add all of your toppings, like other places, but this has the BEST toppings. I know it seems like I am obsessed… because I am. But be careful… you can get carried away and as it is priced by weight things get out of control quickly. A tip is to get a larger container so your toppings stay on. Okay that’s enough on this but If you live in Melbourne and have not been here turn off the computer and go there now. That is all.

4) Winter Nail Polish

I know we spoke about winter clothing trends the other day but as it gets colder I find myself starting to gravitate towards some of my winter nail polish colours. It seems silly to have different colours for the seasons. While there are certainly no rules and I definitely will throw in a bright colour throughout winter such as a red, I do like the darker colours for winter.  I have a slight obsession with nail polish. It takes up a whole tray in our fridge. Mr Short has only complained about this once so I think he is fine with it!

If you can try and keep your nail polish in the fridge it will help it last longer. If it does get a bit gluggy you can add some nail polish remover to work it back to a nice consistency. They wont last that long so be sure to keep refreshing your selection. Or even better share them among friends so you can try lots of colours!

Image

I quite like Nude colours in winter but feel like this Essie – Case Study is nice with a bit more strength.

Image

I am a huge fan of grey nails and will be rocking these again this year. This is a nice shade Essie – Chinchilly.

chinchilly

I have the silver and gold in these metallics from Revlon but may need to add the copper to the collection!

Image

Mama Short , L and I are both big fans of the Navy.

Midnight-Affair_1690838a

While I did not get into the shattered nail polish look I think I will be trying the Matte look for winter.

That is all for the Hit List this week. I promise to be less Melbourne focused next time!

Have an amazing weekend, make the most of it.

A Little Moomba in Your Life.

You’ll have to excuse us we’ve been a little busy enjoying the last of the summer heat to put together some delish recipe posts but rest assured one will be back with a vengeance next week.  So we’ve been enjoying/dying in the 36° weather (97°F for those of you on the imperial system) for the last week and most people think it’s the final heatwave before the leaves start to fall and we’re lusting after that hot drink to warm our frozen hands on the way to work in the morning.  I’m not sure but you never can tell with Melbourne weather.

ANYWAY we just had a long weekend here in Vic and we tried to get outside as much as possible.  The annual Moomba festival (or the “let’s get together and have fun” festival according to a loose translation on Wikipedia) happened on the banks of the Yarra River so we went along to check out what this “Celebration of Melbourne Culture”  was all about.  What we got from the day was an array of soft toys and fruit wearing Rastafarian hats, water skiers who had the guts to actually get in to the Yarra River, puppy lovers, kids who have eaten too much candy, and yeah the photos will say the rest . .  . Warning ridiculously cute puppy photos are attached (say Hi to Mavis).
