The Hit List #1

1. Gumboots or Wellies

The rain has started in Melbourne and unfortunately when it rains here it REALLY rains. While on my way to work this week I  had to walk through puddles that were nearly up to my knees! And yes while I realise that is only up to most peoples ankles, it seems like I am nearly drowning just to get to the office! Suede shoes were NOT a good choice.

I have always associated gumboots with being on the farm or being at a festival for stomping around in the mud. However, the styles that are coming up for winter could almost be deemed as classy! Papa Short would be laughing at this I am sure.  While I do not currently own a pair myself below are a few of the pairs that I am considering purchasing this weekend. I know some of you would never be caught in a pair in the city however I think I can combine functionality with fashion so watch this space.

 2. Alphabet Dates

As life can quickly become very busy Mr Short and I now have a standing date night on Tuesday nights. It is something that I picked up from my parents and it is definitely one of my favourite things. Mr Short had the idea this year that we would work through the alphabet with a letter for each week and one person would organise something that would be a surprise. Little did we know that this was something that a lot of other people are already doing.

It has proven to be so much fun, not only coming up with the ideas with my whole team at work but also being surprised each second week with something fun. The ideas do not have to always be a big cost and sometimes call for creativity, especially as I have both X and Z! If you are looking for something different to do this is really fun to try. Below is B – Burgers, Beers and Bowling.

 3. Fresh Coconuts

At the end of last year Mr Short and I visited some dear friends of ours who live in Vietnam. On every street corner and on the beach you could have a fresh coconut hacked open for you to quench your thirst. While I had had coconut water before I became very dependent on the fresh coconuts to keep me hydrated not to mention for their delicious taste! While the fresh coconuts are the best they are not the easiest to hack into at times and take up a lot of room in our fridge. So I was OVERJOYED when I was grabbing a smoothie from Naked Treaties Raw Bar in Byron Bay (GO THERE… NOW)  recently to discover the Coco Jus tool! While I was already blowing my mind with their smoothie selection I feel head over heels in love with the place when I saw this. I am now the proud owner of the Coco Jus tool and it is making it dangerously easy to consume fresh coconuts… now I just need to get a fridge dedicated for fresh coconuts or better still move to a tropical island and have them on tap. Cocktail recipes using coconut water to come.

4. White Night Melbourne

I love living in Melbourne as there is always something on and this past weekend was White Night Melbourne. The White Night concept was originally formed in Paris as a way of bringing arts and culture to the people of Paris. Melbourne followed this concept by transforming the CBD into a stage from 7pm – 7am and showcasing a variety of music, arts, film, food. The night was a balmy night and brought out over 300,00 people who flooded the central city to explore the events. All in all it was a successful night and they are planning to hold an event in 2014. I am not sure about the 5am events though I definitely was in bed before then :). There are White Night events happening all around the world so see if there is one near you.

The Complex Thinking of an Underemployed Female.

Soooo I’ve found myself in another space in time where I am not in full time employment.  Kind of love it kind of hate it BUT one thing has become clear to me . .  . I am learning a ridiculous amount of ‘stuff’.  Stuff that I had never bothered to think about or I didn’t know that I didn’t know it.  Follow me?

Here are the latest things I have learnt . .

1. Flies buzz round your head because they treat your head the same way they treat poop.  Yep how weird is this?  I was at the park the other day and a tiny fly keep buzzing at me (before you comment YES I do shower often, sometimes twice a day!) no matter how many times I would shoe it away.  It got so close at one stage and landed on my lip almost on my tongue I‘m not going to lie I felt a little violated.   Turns out they’re attracted to and nibble on your dead skin cells YUCCCCCCCCCkkkkk.

Image

2. How to make a coffee.  I’m not saying GOOD coffee it’s something I have never bothered to learn but Mr Long is a coffee buff/connoisseur/works for a coffee company so really was there a better time to learn?

ImageImage

3. Anthony Keidis of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame was suffering from shin splints when he performed at the 2000 Big Day Out in Auckland, and at 14 it was my first of many festivals (RIP Auckland BDO).  A NZ doctor prescribed him a drug that would eventually lead to yet another drug spree when he touched back in LA.  Yes I did just injure my ankle and spend the last week with my feet up reading Scar Tissue.

Image

4. Random facts of world population.   That is increases by over 210’000 people PER DAY!  That Madagascar ‘s population is over 22 Million (I thought is was full of sloths and slow loris’!).  NZ is the 120th most populated country in the world and the population of the Western Sahara is the fastest growing at 3.2% per year who knew?

5. I am in desperate need of a haircut.  How is that you can talk yourself out of one a number of times but still detest every single photo you see of yourself???  A definite must do in the next month.

6.  I will never settle until I’m successful/make myself and my family proud of what I have accomplished.  This one is a little awkward to write as I’m one of those annoying goal orientated people that likes all her ‘ducks in a row’ as my mum says.  I keep telling myself to go back to a crummy job to bring a little ‘fun money’ in but this time there is no way I will let myself because crummy jobs are a little soul destroying.  Soo on that note who has an epic job idea?  Keeping in mind my background is marketing and comms. Anyone? Yeah? PS: watch this space because i’ll have one soon!

A perfect world where all ducks are in a row.

Anything new you’ve learnt this week OR anything you want me to ‘learn’ for you??

Keyyyy Noir . . . (spelt Quinoa)

Being the Melburnian food critics that we are we’re always on the hunt for new and different food ideas that will keep our taste buds tingling and our jeans just that little bit too tight.    Soooo when we came across this recipe that combines two of our greatest loves: Sushi and Keynoir (yes that’s right Quinoa silly) we were over the moon 😀

Brown rice sushi for those of you “out of the loop” is a completely different ball game to that of the ‘white’ kind… It has a slightly crunchy, nutty texture that adds another flavour to sushi and also leaves you feeling as “light as a feather”/you can still fit in to your skinny jeans.

Quinoa the very very distant cousin of brown rice is another ingredient we are frothing over and learning to experiment with.

So now you know a little bit more about our foodie selves we’ll get down to the mouth watering pictures you’ve been waiting for oh and you can find the recipe we used here with a few changes.  To cook the quinoa we used the cooking instructions on the pack and added vege stock for flavour, we used purple and orange carrot, cucumber and avocado as the salad and in our tuna ‘concoction’ we added a little Japanese Kewpie Mayo, spring onion, fresh chilli and black pepper.

Ooooo it is good!  And really REALLY easy

Let us know what you put in your sushi or give us a challenge with something to cook/make!

Surrender to the Season

I unlike S am not a fan of the seasonal change from summer to Autumn.   love the snuggly inside feeling and watching the trees change but I avidly detest the cold and of course you know it’s only matter of time before Winter is knocking on the door.  BUT I am however like many females a fan of having an excuse to revamp the wardrobe and change up my style.

Which brings me to such.  I’m casual, like seriously casual and have been since a young age.  I did the whole pink, floral girly thing, over did it and couldn’t face looking at the colour for the last 20 years (wow 20 years how the hell did I get this old?) I like simple dresses, skinny jeans, tank tops,  denim anything,  sneakers, boots and I’m a big fan of monochrome although I will go colour crazy if need be.  I will occasionally wear a heel but if you didn’t gather by my ‘Alias’ I’m rather tall and a little clumsy so wedges or a healthy flatform is my go to.   I will surrender to wear a pretty textured or tailored dress if an event calls for it but as soon as I get home it’ll be off within seconds (to change I mean!) I’ve scoured numerous look books of my favourite and some new designers and here is my Autumn wish list.

Fancy foot work

Although I live for a good pair of black boots I though I should branch out this year and potentially add a splash of colour.

And then the wind changed

We have been living in paradise in Melbourne this summer with the weather being almost tropical island like. But after a slight change to a FREEZING 20 degrees it jump started the thoughts of Autumn and Winter approaching. I personally love living in a climate where there are defined seasons. I love watching the change in the trees around the city and being curled up on the couch with a hot chocolate while listening to the storms outside. At Mr Short and my current home we have an amazing view of the thunder storms across the city… yes I may be old in saying this but they are great to watch.
However, my favourite part of the season changes, and Mr Short’s least favourite, is watching all the new season clothes come into the stores. In viewing some of the trends and styles that have been coming in for this Autumn/Winter I have not been overly amazed but have liked the odd pieces here and there. These are some of the items that I am hoping to add to my wardrobe for the season;

Oversized Jumpers – There are a number of Jumpers in beautiful materials such as cashmere cropping up in the collections for this season and some great pops of colour as well.

Boots – My go to pair of ankle boots have seen better days, although I love them so much I will definitely wear them until the end. I need to find a replacement pair to get me through the season. While I love the flat boots something with a slight heel is always a good option for me!

Beau Coups – Love the gold detailing on these

Short Coat – This season I want to invest in a short coat/jacket as sometimes I want to kick up my heels and they get stuck in my long coat which can end in disaster! Loving the pop of colour from Zambesi… although maybe not  the matching pants too 🙂

WELCOME TO US.

Here it is the inaugural blog post from us, Sez and Naea!  We wanted to share a pretty amazing holiday we were both just on in Byron Bay.  A wonderful group of friends bought us flights to Byron for our birthday (we are born a day apart) last year and we finally got to use them this last weekend.  We hired a pretty epic house complete with lagoon pool and Jenga and spent as much time in the sun, drinking, eating and adventuring as we could.   Byron you have our heads, hearts and our wallets!
